My wife and I hiked up to the lower Horton Lake on Sat. What a beautiful place and equally beautiful day. There's two old mining establishments up here, that I've got to find more info about. Neat place to explore and a really cool glacial valley. Definitelly going back there!

I converted this to a duotone in PS.

Great find Cory. There's lots of great character in the old building and the sepia tint adds to the shot.

That whole canyon is an excellent area for photographers to backpack into because of the colorful metamorphic rock, craggy peaks, gnarly trees, aspen, and very few people due to the ugly trailhead dirt road. ...David

Thanks for the comments guys. It's a great little area that I intend to thoroughly explore.

Cory, if my math is correct, 7 roofing nails to the loose tin and this looks like a move in to me. Good find. What kind of hike is it to this area?

Paul: It's a beautiful hike in!! As far as difficulty, this one's pretty easy, from my perspective at least. Ask my wife and she'd say differently! We drive up to the wilderness gate/boundary via the Hortin Lake Trail road. From this boundary line it is 4mi to the lower Horton lake, or so I've been told. From the usgs topo I've got, the elev. at the wilderness gate is ~8200' and lower Horton is ~10,200'. Not too bad. The trail is an old miner's road to the lower lake. Some might find that a turn off, but I don't and this little glacial valley is very nice. Can't wait 'til spring and fall to see this place. I didn't know about it 'til a friend at work asked if I'd been there. My list of places to explore is growing exponentially, but my time to do so stays the same!! Oh, I'm referencing USGS topos Tungsten Hills and MT. TOM. Hope that answered your question. Thanks for commenting!

Cory,

I've been meaning to comment on this. If this isn't a perfect subject for B&W, I don't know what it. I love this. Even the scraggly bare aspens framing the image. You definately should go back there!
