I have a 5 day trip to San Jose. Do you have any advice on the best locations for landscape and or bird photography in the area? Thank you for your help.

Well, some general directions: highway-1 (many places over the whole coast from big sur to SF, beaches between 1/2 moon bay and santa cruz), San Andreas fault: skyline boulevard/35 (pinnacles, windy hill or any other place you want to stop at), reservoir at 280&92, the observatory. If you go to the bay itself around milpitas, there must be marshes with birds. i'll let others list those.
If you driver farther, 2H: pinnacles, or the sierras: 4H: tahoe area, i108, yosemite... If you go north past SF then a lot more.

Hi Stephen,
Many wonderful areas. Route 92 and/or 82 between 280 and the coast. Pescadero, Felton, La Honda, Big Basin Redwoods State Park.

You mentioned birds. Palo Alto Baylands park has nice birding opportunities. At the end of San Antonio road (where it terminates at the bay) you can shoot pelicans, egrets, herons, ducks, geese, and many other species. This is very close to San Jose.
For overcast, check out Big Basin Redwoods. Sempervirens falls is easily accessible and very nice. For a clear day, visit the ocean.
