Don't know if this is news for anyone but it seems that BA is making life more difficult for everyone. I know that most people will try to take their cameras etc as cabbin baggage with them but when the wife and I travel long haul we have three bags between the two of us - one of which has my tripod etc. in. Looks like I will have to invest in a bigger case then :(

Hi Adrian
thanks for your posting it is becoming a nightmare travelling with camera gear nowadays. As far as getting a bigger bag do you realise that the maximum size to get on board is 22inches x 18 inches x 10 inches. and with contents 8 kilos weight.
TOTAL Nightmare.

What an absolute joke - how is anyone supposed to take a 500mm lens and a gitzo tripod overseas and have any clothes to wear without paying through the nose. What a price we have to pay for our work and pleasures these days.
What's more the airlines are inconsistant some allowing 10kg allowance for takeon, some 12kg+. I was stopped the other day and told that my Peli case with camera gear would not be allowed on as hand lugage as it was 12kg in weight. Size was not an issue as Peli do the case specifically for flights. This was after all the checking in and scanners etc, following 10 minutes dicussing what to do and the contents being fragile and of high value. The representative realised that as I was going by EasyJet and that I was OK and let me through if I'd been on any other airline he was wanting to put it in the hold or leave it behind. Looks like the one time that booking with EasyJet has made life easier.
They take your hold baggage off you, say nothing as they look at you standing there with the carry-on baggage and subsequently, at a much later stage, inform you that it cannot be carry-on baggage and that you will either have to check it in or leave it behind (as if)... it makes my blood boil.
Why oh why can the person who is checking in your hold baggage have a bit of intelligence and ask to check your carry on baggage for weight and dimensions FIRST - it could save so much angst, for that way you could transfer some to your carry-on to your hold cases if required. They obviuosly don't give a hoot for customer satification.
I have successfully argued that my camera equipment is sports equipment before.
I actually travel with Easyjet when I can - they are then only ones that take a practical view of most things that shoot.
Just take note that the external dimensions of Peli's supposed flight case model number 1510 (56*35*23) are now actually outwith Easyjets carry on dimensions of 55*40*20.
Give the bad carriers a bloody nose where it hurts - in their wallets. Vote with your feet and money...find a carrier who will deliver the service you want. Admitedly easier said than done these days when all they want to do is fleece you...
Perhaps there should be a 'Photographic Industry' 'surcharge' on any work a photographer does for or supplies to airlines - that way we get to charge them back. Everyone else pays 100%, Airlines pay 200%
just got back from ecuador on KLM, it seems they remain excellent and didnt even look at my handluggage which was a laptop bag stuffed with about 20 dv cam cassettes and a hard drive, plus my hard camera case which both add up to around 20 kgs, plus 60 kgs of hold luggage, which i only paid an excess of less than £3 for. excellent.
only flown with BA once and the sour attitudes of the stewardesses made me vow never to again.
