Hello Tim,

Do you still own your D2h?

If so, have you ever used the tc-16a with a manual focus lens on that body, and found that it auto focuses!!

After doing some research, a number of people have said that it does, but a couple of people have said it doesn't  . I suspect those who said it doesn't, have not set the camera up properly, but i would like to be 100% certain.

If it does, i may try and get myself a s/h body {if i can find one without too many frames fired}, and see how it fares with my 400 2.8. Although the tc-16a is aimed at 300mm or shorter, apparently it gives decent results on 500mm lenses also {due to the dx sensor's cropping of any vignetting}.

Anyway, if you have tried that combo, i would appreciate your confirmation of AF {or not}.

Hi Alan,
Yep I still have my D2h but I haven't used the tc-16a. A quick internet search brought up this site which confirms your 300mm statement, but I think its out of date.

I think you should contact Grey's of Westminster and ask them, they could possibly even try out the combination.

Looking forward to seeing some Alan specials.

Hi Alan - just looking at the site Tim refers to (very handy for Canon and Nikon info) - see the autofocus range for the 300mm lenses is infinity to 35metres :frown:

Just read further - not so bad - you just have to adjust the focus ring to allow a closer AF range. Best of luck, notice Dalephotographic in Leeds has one for sale for £149.

Thanks Tim/John,

Yes, the tc-16a's are pretty cheap s/h, and apparently fairly quick focusing {due to its narrow focusing band at shortish distances}.

Unfortunately there is only a small choice of bodies that it will function on, and it definately won't AF on my D70 {although it will mount}.

I may get one of those tc's first {before forking out for a body}, and see how the quality shapes up on my 400mm before i take the plunge though.

cheers

Hi Alan it will work on the d2h/s/x/s d1/h/x.

Phillip.

Thats great Phillip!

I didn't realise that tc also worked on those bodies, although most of the info i gathered is pretty old {pre digital}. I know it will mount on a number of digital bodies {and can be used as a standard tc}, but apparently the AF function only works with certain ones.

I shall do some further research.

Thanks

Hi Alan

I used TC-16A c/w a Sigma 400mm/f5.6 (non-AF) on my F90X. The combination would AF in good light, but rather slowly I recall.

If you really want this particular TC just me drop an e-mail & I'll certainly beat any price quoted above. You can try it out to see if you like it, if you prefer.

Thanks for that Wayne,

Unfortunately i ordered one this afternoon {bugger}.

I shall be comparing the quality of this tc against my tc-14 {mounted on my D70}, and providing it compares favourably i shall search for a reasonably priced s/h d2h body. If the quality is not quite up to the mark, i can return it within 14 days for a refund.

Hopefully it should AF fairly quickly on my 400mm {2.8}, but its just fingers crossed at the moment.

Thanks again!!

Alan
