Devils Punch Bowl and the Red Cedar Trail and are located outside Menomonie, Wisconsin along the Red Cedar River and offer some interesting photo opportunities in the winter. A large section of the trail follows limestone cliffs. Water seeps from the sandstone formations and in the winter the water freezes to a depth of several feet creating large ice walls. Devils Punch Bowl is one formation that is adjacent to the trail. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=5571253
There are other formations along the Red Cedar Trail. My web site has several photos from both locations. Photos 8 and 10 were taken earlier in the year when the ice was first forming. Photo 27 shows water dripping from a branch to form an ice sheet. It appeared that it was originally about 12x24 inches before part of it broke off. During the winter the Ice walls on the Red Cedar Trail are reached by x-country skis. Photos 21-26 show various ice falls at Devils Punch Bowl and along the trail http://philipschwarz.zenfolio.com/p52841842/
