If by Amherst Island you mean the isle in Lake Ontario that is close to the mouth of the St Lawrence River I woudl expect COLD! Actually I have never been there in any season but you can read about the place here:

I seem to remember something about a fairly large population of Owls on the Island but that is a very foggy memory.

Let me know how it works out! I talked to a fellow who was there over a month ago and he got some great shots of rough legged hawks and a few snowy owls. I dont know if he shot from his car or was able to walk around. What is the typical mode of operation there? I've never been but it looks mostly like fields? Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated, I am only a few hours from there.
