Hi All,

I would like to buy a 580ex speedlite flash gun and a better beamer to use with it. I am a bit confused as to which mounting I need so I can attach the better beamer to my wimberley head. I know I will need the hot shoe extension cord for flash to body, but there seems to be a load different little mounting arms  . It will be on my 600/4 if that makes any difference.
Also where is the best place to buy the BB and mounting arm from, as Warehouse Express don't seem to have them on their website, and I've been waiting nearly 3 months for a levelling base from them  so would like to try somewhere else if possible.

Any help is much appreciated

Regards

Rob

Hi Rob..

Can't help with the mount for your wimberly as I use one that I custom made from a couple of old studio magic arms.

Warehouse express the BB is listed as the Kirk Flash xtender, I believe Phillip Tomkinson bought one recently... other than WE you could try SpeedGraphic.

Who makes your Arca-Swiss lens mounting plate for the 600mm?

Does it have a flash Bracket Mounting hole(s) at the top end? If so stick with that make and save yourself the hassle. The better machined ones give you lifetime quality albeit slightly more expensive -.

i.e. My plate is make by Kirk as is my telephoto Flash Bracket..it all mates together.

www.kirkphoto.com

I ordered direct from the USA.

Hi I got mine from SpeedGraphic not only cheaper than warehouse express but the service was better three months for a levelling plate I can beat that six months I've been waiting for a short centre column, anyway have got fed up of waiting and decided to machine myself one on my lave and milling machine just need to find some 75mm solid alloy bar.

Phillip.

Which Wimberley head do you have Rob? And do you have any other of the Wimberley flash attachment arms?

If you're using a Mk1 - Pan locking knob vertical (Pre 2006) then you will need the following items:
Flash Module M5

If you're using a Mk2 - Pan locking knob horizontal (2006 on) you will need the following:
new Flash Module M-9 (or old flash module M5 + new adaptor FA9)

That bit fixes to the Wimberley head, but you then also need the M3 Tilt arm to fix the flash gun onto. This is the bit that you screw the off-camera-cord onto. You can buy combined sets of the bits - you'd need set F4 for the old Style or set F9 for the Wimberley Head Mk2.

You also have the choice of going for the Telephoto bracket F1 set - this lot attaches to the quick release plate on the lens rather than to the Wimberley head

Check out more of the bits at the Wimberley Website. You might be able to buy from Jim at the NPN Store, or you can also get them from Bob Rigby

Hope that helps...

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

Nick: You say the MKI ( old version which is what I have) has pan locking knob in the vertical, but mine (and on the website) is horizontal under where the lens sits. It seems the new version has the vertical position knob.

Is this an error on your part or am I really getting my knickers in a twist

Anyway the attached image is of the head I have. I have no other flash mounting brackets/arms.
I have ordered the better beamer from the NPN store  so am I right in saying what I need now is a flash module M5 and a M3 tilt arm and the off camera shoe cord 2, then I should have everything I need??

Thanks for your help

Regards

Hi Rob,

You have the MkI (the locking knob shaft is vertical). You can buy any of the following:

Set F1 - attaches to lens quick release plate - Arca Swiss Style. (M1, M2 and M3 modules)
Set F4 - Old-Style Wimberley Head (M3 and M5 modules)
or - Individual modules: M5 + M3

Plus Of-camera cord .

Hi, i hope its not too late but you should definitely get one that clamps to your lens plate and not the wimberly head itself. Simple reason that the arm will still be useful when u decide to dismount the lens and use it out a window or as handheld sidearm. U laugh but when you do shoot forest birds, it is often easier to handhold and bash around the bush even if its a 600 f4
