OT: Firewire connection help

I've been having problems with the firewire connection for a scanner and an external hard drive. Both worked fine initially but first my laptop (which has a firewire card) wouldn't recognize my scanner and now it won't recognize the hard drive. It will, however, still recognize another scanner, so the card still seems to be working fine. I've tried the scanner on another computer and it still doesn't work. And I've tried using different cords, turning the devices on and off, restarting the computer with the devices on or off, tried both firewire connections on the card. But nothing seems to work.

Before I send the scanner in for repair and give up on the hard drive, I thought I might ask if any of the computer whizzes on here know of anything I can do to get the computer to recognize the devices. Initially I assumed the scanner simply wasn't working, but it seems odd that I'm now having the same problem with a firwire connection with two different devices.

Grant,

I'm pretty sure that I'm in the same boat with a USB device in one of my PCs. I think the hardware (USB device on the PC not the printer or card reader) is starting to go bad. Not all computer parts die all at once.

One thing that I might try first (and I hadn't thought of this until now with my own stuff) is to use a little rubbing alchol on a Q-tip or smaller cotton swab. The contacts may be corroded or have some dust on them. I'd probably turn the PC off to do this.
