Apostle Island National Lakeshore Ice Caves
This is want I saw. I tried to give as much attention to the rock as I did the Ice. It's quite beautiful in and of itself. Hope I did some justice to this. The late afternoon light really made the caves a beautiful sight to see but it also made for some difficult lighting issues to try handle. Any help, idea's or suggestions are very Welcome.

Barb,

Very cool shot ( no pun intended) and great light on a great subject. A few things I would do here is probably crop the left a bit and maybe the foreground just a little. You also may be able to retouch ( using the cloning tool) that bright area over on the left-center. It's kind of distracting. I like the detail in the rock. Other wise I wish I was there... we have some of this here in Ohio, but nothing in the cave-like subject like this. ( GO back & do some macro on the ice too--you'll be amazed what you see!).

Jack - remember this cave last Sunday at Princess Ledges? This qualifies, no?

Barb - nice effect - I am seeing some rather dark tones. Is that what you intended?

Nice scene image Barb. I like the composition as is, but I think a bit of additional processing is required to bring it to its full potential. The scene seems a bit magenta/red heavy for some reason (WB issue?). In terms of dealing with the mixed lighting, the options seem to be blending exposures or shooting at a different time of day. Using filters will give you a bit more control as well, but oftentimes the compositions will dictate what you do. Diffused lighting might make for easier shooting with some scenes (this one for example), but others probably would look to drab (such as the image you posted on ES&S). Always a compromise game.
