I would of liked a greater depth of field, however at my feeding station the background is relatively close so I choose a nicer background to all of the bird in focus - I suppose I could have blurred the background during post processing, but this is where I start to draw the line with computer enhancement.
Techs:
Nikon D70
300mm f4 + 1.4TC
Beanbag
1/125 @ f6.3
Saturation, Curves and sharpening applied in CS2

Hi Mark,
Background looks fine to me.
The red plumage on the face could do with being a bit reder, looks a tad darker than normal.
Well taken

Hi Mark, lovely bird on a great perch and a good BG. My only suggestion would be to remove the few snowflakes (I think I prefer many or none).

Hi Mark
How do you like your Lens / TC Combo ? I am just about to buy the 300mm with the 1.7TC
Do you think 1.7 is too much for this lens or will i be okay ?
Wow, great looking shot, I think I would lose the flakes in this case but still a sweet shot.

Thanks everyone for your comments.
Paul,
I'm very happy with the 300mm, it's very sharp even with my Kenko Pro 1.4 TC and doesn't appear to be much slower in the AF department when connected either, I don't have the 1.7TC although it is on my list of WTB!! along with many thousands of pounds of other equipment

Nicely done, so glad you decided not to go down the PS blurred bg route... I too would lose the snow flakes though, I can see why you would want them but there is just not enough to be effective.
