Dipper on ice by -34!
I have been on my annual trip to Finland last week and for 2 days the temperatures were well below 30! I can honestly say that after visiting Finland now for 8 times: it was NEVER that cold. It made photographing outdoors , at times, very unpleasant. The camera's started to behave strangely and both Guy Edwardes and myself suffered frostbite on the nose and my eyelid froze up!

Canon EOS1DMark2/4.0-500IS/gitzo 1325/Black Widow/ARC/CS2

Lovely penetrating light

The european "dark bellied" dipper, (our dipper is a subspecies with the chestnut belly band) - lots of these singing in Austria last week, but no snow as a backdrop this year! and no camera either :frown: still I dont think my skiing prowess would stand me using a camera just yet

Minus 30
Frostbite on the Nose
Eyelid Frozen

Sounds like you had a great time :jump:

After seeing your Golden Eagle shot & the setting for this Dipper, you can at least say you came back with some brilliant shots.

Very well exposed & taken Rene

This looks good Rene. They say we have to suffer for our art and it sounds like you and Guy did that

I would not have been able to stand the low temps as I still have too thin blood from my years in Africa.

Very productive trip though by the looks of it.

Hi Rene

Wow, sounds cold to me  top marks for dedication.

I see you are using Canon equipment, I thought you were a Nikon man. Have you switched?

cheers

Lovely picture Rene, and well done for braving the elements for your picture!

May I ask why you switched to Canon?

regards Chris.

Christ Rene! sounds like you have been through the wars. Very nice dipper, looks a little like it's thinking "gonna make this quick i'm freezing"... I remember my D60 freezing when it was -12 a few years ago, I can only imagine how bad -30 would be. Btw I really want to visit finland. Then again i'm not just a wildlife fan... I like nightwish too...

Very nice shot - sounds like masochism to me. Also wonder how the bird stands it.

I really must get my better half interested in photography lol No way would she let me travel around taking photographs and I would kill for the opportunity to take an image like this. Weather would have to be alot warmer though ;)

Pretty bird - looks like it's warming it's feet.

Your eyelid froze up... - you really must stop winking at the birds Rene :jump:.

Hi Rene,
Great result.Sounds like quite a challenge getting images in such trying conditions, that's dedication for you  :toast:

It's a beautiful image! I like the bg featuresÉ the black line throught the frame starting from below the bird, and the ice. They serve to accentuate the climate and conditions you and the bird were in. Somehow I think it has more adaptations to its environment than you do!
 Frozen eyelid sounds creepy to me. I hope you're alright and all intact, eyelid, nose and all else!

Hello Rene
A really well defined bird and the whole image certainly conveys the bitter cold.
Best wishes
