Curious young robin
D200 18-200mmVR 200mm 1/30sec f5.6 iso100, hand held VR

I am assuming this is a young bird judging by the chest down. Absolutely fearless, approached to about 3ft. Taken in northern Scotland Sept 2006, dull wet day which explains the poor exposure. I have sharpened slightly in Capture NX and cropped but otherwise no post processing

Hi John

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Cute first post. Yes, it is a young Robin. I had one too in my garden in 2005, very approachable, especially with a handful of mealworms.

cheers

Welcome John :toast:

A great first post, for some reason I don't see that many shots of young Robins

All the best

Hi John,
I'm a fan of young robins I like their feathers, full of intersting patterns. I had a play with your pic, I noticed you are using adobe RGB, web can only display sRGB so its best to use that colour space when posting. Also I think the wood looks a bit magenta so I altered the white balance (lazely by using variations in photoshop), and did a bit more sharpening. First pic I've seen on this forum using the 18-200mm VR seems sharp enough.
Charming bird.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice, tweaking the WB has certainly sharpened up the colour and I will take on board the advice about colour space. I tend to use the 18-200VR as my hiking lens for scenery but this shot has brought home to me the benefit of VR in situations when no support is available or would take too much time to set up and would result in a nice picture of an empty fence! I am currently deciding between the Nikkor 70-200VR or the Nikkor 300mm F4 for a general wildlife lens ( I have the kenko x1.4 and x2 TC's), any advice on these two would be welcome, I know they both have a reputation for sharpness but what is the focusing speed like on the 300mm without AF-S.

It is a nice capture and Tims repost has improved the colours.

I would be tempted to clone out the light coloured stems sticking up in the background. A slightly different shooting angle (if possible) could have avoided them, but in any case the robin looks good from this angle.

It is a very nice composition. The young robin is very endearing with his head on one side.

Well caught :toast:
