Hi all...My sister and I are traveling to Oregon in August. We're headed to Canon Beach area. I'm interested in a few things and I figured you all might be able to give me some info and ideas.

1. Lodging...we're happy with B&B's as well as inns and low budget lodging.

2. Places for photography (aside from Canon Beach)...we're willing to drive up to 2 -3 hours. Interested in coastal as well as inland.

Our time is limited so obviously we want to make the most of it. My sister is not into photography but she does enjoy seeing all of it.

Thanks in advance for any info you might be able to give me.

1. Columbia River Gorge early mornings or late evenings....the sun kills everything mid day

2. all up and down the coast, the sunsets will be great.....

3. there are lots of Parks in the Portland area that will have nice flowers and blooms this time of year

Be sure to visit Astoria, it's great for both photographers and non-photgraphers. The view from the top of the Astoria Column is pretty good (and it's good exercise just climbing up there)

For the rest of the Oregon Coast, check out this book

Beth,

I'll risk interloping from the Rocky Moutain Region, but I lived in Seattle for awhile. In any case, I would put Bandon on your must see list. Personally, I thought it was the highlight of the Oregon Coast. The seafood is to die for there as well. I also liked Oceanside. Both these towns have lots of B&B's, and you might find better rates there. While we had a quick visit to Canon Beach, we stayed away from there because it was so 'touristy'. I guess that only made us psuedo-tourists. Regardless, you can't go too wrong going to the coast. I'm sure the true Oregonians on this site will give you some great first hand info. Have fun!

I agree that Bandonis a good choice for the coast. There is a small motel right above the Ocean called the Table Rock Motel. You can give it a google. When I head down there thats where I stay and we pay around $40.00 a night with great ocean access. Just go down the stairs to the ocean and from there to about a mile south there are great photo opps. The Columbia Gorger that time of year kind of looses it's vibrant greens. Mt. Raineer might also be another choice. August is wild flower time in the high mountains.

Hi - there is a great small book for "Good Photography sites on the Oregon Coast" (forget it's exact name) that I have and would be happy to lend you, if you like, as well as a couple others (wildflower spots for August, scenic drives, etc) Email me if you're interested.

You may want to purchase one or two of these newsletters:

http://photographamerica.com/backissu.htm

That is the collections page, or you can get individual newsletters. Some of them are a bit dated but all are still worthwhile. I bought the full collection, and have it on my laptop for when I travel.

Highly recommended - check out the sample newsletter he has available online to see the content, they include both shooting locations with best time, logistics, best places to stay and eat, etc.

I'll mention that lodging and food is excellent at Yachats, on the central/south coast (Le Serre is excellent)... be sure to check out Heceta Head lighthouse. The pullout between there and Sea Lions Cave is a classic NW shot...

Thanks for the info all. I think we will look into staying away frmo Canon a little bit due to the "touristy" stuff.
