Slimbridge Mute Swan
Hi All

Another shot from Saturdays trip to Slimbridge. When it is dull conditions I often try for flight shots using slow shutter speeds to get a nice blurring effect both in the background and also in the wings.

This was taken handheld out of the top window of the South Lakes hide. I used the top window so I could try to avoid including sky in the shot, and luckily this swan flew past at quite a low level.

For this shot to work well I personally like to see the head/eye nice and sharp. I am just off the mark here and the head and eye are slightly soft and need plenty of USM. I wish my 300mm had IS at times like these.....

Canon 20D, 300mm F4 L + 1.4x TC, ISO 400, f7.1, 1/60th, Eval metering + 2/3rds, servo focus centre point only, nearly full frame, slight rotation and crop to level the horizon.

cheers

Sean

Hello Sean
I agree with your comments about the head and eye, they just need to be sharper. Maybe a little too central in the frame, but there's not much you could do about that I suppose! I like the wing blur, it certainly conveys the movement well.
Best wishes

Definately not one of your best shots Sean, sorry to say that  Under the conditions of that dull day at least you got something decent.

Sorry to sound negative

Hi Vincent

You are right on the nail with your comments. Not my best day of photography on Saturday, and if you think this is bad you should see the rest of my images.... I have now worn my delete key out on my keyboard....

cheers

Hi Sean,
I don't think this is a bad effort at all.I think the movement in the wings is just about right, and I'm not sure I'd have even picked up on the very slightly soft head had you not mentioned it.
I personally find these shots so satisfying and effective when everything comes together (not that I've experienced that very often  ),but it's certainly blimmin' hard trying to get them just right. An applaudable effort that's so very nearly there
