Grey Heron
The Herons that frequent our local nature reserves are very nervous and tend to fly off at the slightest hint of an approaching human. This was taken early morning and as I approached the bird hide there were 3 Herons but luckily only 2 flew, leaving this one who stayed for about 2 minutes, just long enough for me to get a shot. The light was pretty grim.

500mm f/4L IS with 1.4x II TC and 1D MkII N, ISO 400, 1/60 sec. at f/5.6. Levels, noise ninja & slight USM.

I would prefer the heron to be off centre. It would be compositionally stronger for my taste, but each to their own, and I appreciate shooting conditions might not have allowed it.

The heron looks good, despite the bad light. I like its size in the frame and the sense of its surroundings. I like images with lots of negative space.

Nice one!!

Hi Paul,

I really like this, but I think it can be improved by cropping to off centre the Heron.

It has a great sense of environment and the "lone hunter" about it.

Regards

Rob

Thanks Richard & Rob for your advice, you're right here's a cropped version which I think looks alot better?

Hi Paul,

I think the repost looks nicely balanced now.
And despite the dull light it is a very nice image. I like the bit of colour in the herons bill and the reflection.

I've just seen your web site. You have a cracking set of images and very nicely presented too. It's going to take a while to go through them all.

A fine shot Paul, with the re-post being the compositionally stronger of the two.
I like the stillness of the scene and the particles on the water surface bring back memories of warm Summer evenings with backlit insect fluttering around, above, and on, the water's surface.
