Hey all,
I know Dan and I have chatted about making a day trip to Yosemite. Looks like the conditions may be shaping up for some snow in the valley this week AND the potential opportunity for Horsetail falls.
Dan, you up for it? Anyone else interested? I'm in Livermore and probably leave here by 4:30am.
Even if there's no snow, should be clear/partly cloudy on Saturday and we all know there's plenty of photo ops regardless of the conditions.
I was on my way to Wyoming but had to cancell and thought about going to Yosemite on Friday for the weekend, as you said, the conditions look good this time!
I'll let you know by tomorrow.

Best of luck. I've been waiting all this winter for a low snow level storm and this is the first chance. But am tied up around town till Saturday morning so will miss a Sierra road trip. Since there might be some snow down to 2000 feet I might try to set up something locally depending how that plays out. Would really like to catch some snow on blue oaks out at Pacheco. Another cold storm though smaller is firming up for Monday/Tuesday so will likely make the drive to Yosemite then if that looks workable. ...David

Lon -- Man...sounds good! Room for a digital shooter with you all?? I will see if I can swing the trip and let you know tomorrow.

Lon and I chatted about this trip earlier today.
I have 3 in my car heading out about 3AM (from Sacto) arriving before sunrise or "light sky" as I call it if there are clouds.. ..If you see a female with blonde pigtails..it's probably me;-) and my car plates are ( I "heart" Rumi ) . So far we are trying to stay with a relatively loose schedule during the day, cuz everyone wants to follow the light?? for some reason?? but I usually have oatmeal at the YL cafeteria around 9AM and then lunch at Degnan's Deli around 2-3 PM and then dinner is already set for The Mountain Room at 7PM. They will only let us set 4 at a table, but my table will be under "Cross" and if you ask them to place you in a table next to us that would be cool!!
Hope to meet some kindred spirits there that day and put some faces & characters to some names!!!
I'll be there, almost for sure! I should be leaving SF on Friday to try to get to Yosemite before sunset. I'll probably stay all weekend in the valley.

Great Enrique! Hope to see you around there on Saturday.
I'm leaving early Sat morning. I'll be driving a silver Ford Escape. Nelcha and I are tentatively meeting for lunch at Degnan's Deli in Yosemite Village at 2pm if you want to meet up there. Other wise, I'll most likely stick to the western end of the valley - I'll call it the 1st loop where there's a cross over to exit the valley. In fact, unless things have changed in the last 2 weeks, there is a major detour where the southside drive is closed at that junction and the northside drive is a two way road between El Cap meadow and Yosemite Lodge. Which is a bonus now in getting to the Horsetail location.

May not make it as I am feeling a bit under the weather...will look for your Escape if I do. I have a new dark grey Honda Pilot...so, if you see one parked along the side of the road it is probably me. Travel safe!

Hey all...just barging in here...but I am leaving in 6 hours to drive from Portland, down to Stockton. Then Sunday, if I can...I plan to spend the day in Yosemite. I'll be driving a black '87 Nissan Pathfinder, and my cell is 503.260.6495. If any of ya'll are there on Sunday...give me a jingle, it would be cool to meet up with you folks.
Soooo, how was your trip to the Valley, you guys? I hope you had a grand time! I know you had snow on the valley floor, because it snowed 3-4 inches here in Columbia (2,200 feet) on Thursday night.
Let's see some images!

Well, I'm back from Yosemite. Unloaded the car, said hello to the wife and back on the computer within the hour (HOW SAD IS THAT?)
Had a glorious two days in the valley. Woke up this morning to 3 inches of snow and it snowed all day today, sometimes pretty heavily.
I did meet up with Enrique and it was great to finally meet someone from this forum! We only shot at the same place once, but in typical fashion the photographer is a loner anway and we ended up shooting our own stuff. Passed each other several times and waved. No matter how short, it's always good to have a kinship with fellow photographs. Hope to see you again Enrique!
Not sure if Dan ever made the trip. I suspect not since I didn't speak with him Friday. Let me know if you made it up there Dan, sorry I missed you. But it was great talking with you on the phone the other day. Hope we can get together and shoot.
Rick - I know this is way late.... I'm sure I probably saw you driving around today - I didn't leave the valley until 4pm. Next time, give me some notice!
Preston and for those wanting to know how the trip went, it was not without it's trauma. Photographically, yet another stellar weekend of photography. However, the weekend started out with a real bummer. On my way in, I struck and killed a deer just past Mariposa. I knew she was a goner because the head was down when I hit her. Needless to say, this wasn't the start I had envisioned. Left headlamp assembly and bumber need to be replaced. My first stop in the Valley was at the first valley cross-over from southside drive to northside drive (it's actually a detour right now.) I hiked in from there about 1/2 mile for some shooting along the Merced. Three hours later I returned to the car - only to find that I had left the passenger door open!!!! G*d d*mnit!!! how could I be so stupid. fortunately, no theives, animal or human and everything was ok, including my wallet and phone. Remember, things always come in three's...... Sure enough, I got a speeding ticket in Yosemite Valley just past the Yosemite Lodge!!! (39 in a 25.)
I photographed under the umbrella the entire day today, but hopefully got some good shots. Photography was great... everything else sucked.
I'm glad to hear you're home safe. I'm sorry to hear about your trials. Happily, you were not hurt in the deer incident.
It rained hard here most of last night and today, and so it is stll, at 10PM. I imagine the roads are pretty treacherous: that's why I stayed home today after work.
I hope you got some good shots. I'm looking forward to seeing them. The same goes for other members of CANP who were in Yosemite this weekend.
I'm back too. Yup, the weekend was fun and I have some nice pics to show for it. Met up with Lon, we chatted for a while and then, as solitary wolves, we went our separate ways.
I did try to get to Mariposa Grove but got in trouble with some ice on the road during the sow storm and managed to end up in a ditch... it had been a very long time since the last time a drove in winter conditions. Next time I will be more careful.
I'll post a pic as soon as I can choose a RAW to process.
Lon, lets keep in touch and meet up again sometime.

Rather difficult to work with others in snowy winter conditions. My sedan will be packed to the gills for snow camping. Given the current forecast, I'm probably going to make the 5 hour drive to YV tomorrow morning, Tuesday, in order to stage this coldest pool of air that is now forecast to arrive later tomorrow with showers. So Wednesday morning if clouds clear some, might offer the best snow conditions this winter. And if not Thursday looks to have more sun. Snow levels are going to be down to 1000 to 1500 feet in the foothills so at 4000 feet, the south facing side cliffs will finally get cold enough for snow to better stick. I'll be living cheap each night at Camp 4 in my Moss tent. ...David

Well, Sorry for your troubles on your Yosemite trip you guys. I never made it afterall...got caught up in some errands on Sunday. At least I got to shoot a little on the way home yesterday. Even if only for 15 minutes.
I think I am looking forward to seeing your posts from YNP...but I might get bummed that I missed it
