It might be overkill for a lot of people, but Canon has announced the new 1D III. It seems the ideal body for sports shooters and for wildlife shooters, with 10mp/ 10fps. There are other very interesting features which make the impending debut (sometime) of the newest 1Ds body something to watch for. Here is the announcement:

Also a 16-35 2.8L II for those who say Canon's wide angle zooms are subpar.....

Very cool. I can't wait to hear about upgrades to their other bodies.

I really hope Canon is spending vast amounts of their resources trying to make their lenses capable of matching the quality of their bodies. A CA-free wide-angle or wide-angle zoom would be a dream come true.

What Todd said. My 17-40L is pretty sharp, but it does have CA issues when used wide open. I could not find any reviews on this new 16-35L lens. I would have expected DP Review to have some initial impressions. DP Review was blatantly upset at Canon for not giving them some early info on any of the latest releases so that they could write some reviews. They even posted their anger in bright green on the lens annoucement on their site. I didn't even hear rumors of these new releases. Looks like Canon is sealing the cracks on product info...and making a few loyal camera junkies upset. The Sigma 14MP with the foveon sensor started shipping a couple of days ago as well. I think that the foveon sensor could make a big impact on the industry...too bad they teamed up with Sigma.

LCD live view (hopefully with live histogram) and 14-bit are nice developments for the DSLR line ... moving in the right direction anyway. And hopefully, the new UD/coating features on the lens translates into optimization for DSLR use.

Now, where's the 17mm tilt shift.

Scott - The Sigma sd-14 sample photos are not that impressive, imo. It sounds like a lot of the Sigma fans are a bit disappointed. The technology is awesome and blows bayer sensors away pixels for pixel, but at this point I think you can still get better resolution using a downsampled bayer image from a larger sensor. Too bad cause I really had my eye on the sd14! I am excited to see what else gets announce before and during PMA.

Todd, I'm afraid your CA free wide angle zoom is essentially an engineering impossibility, given the current state of technology. What we need is an adaptive (i.e deformable) optic element within the lens!! It's okay to dream I guess.

Interesting article. It certainly shows where they are headed.
The improvements will trickle down in short order.
