D200 Sigma 500mm @ f5 ISO 800 1/125s Ergorest and muddy knees

Found my first water voles, i was ecstatic, shame the weather wouldn't help me a little with some better light.

I'm sure you were pleased to find them.

The light might have been poor but this looks pretty good to me.
I think it could do with a bit more sharpening, but I really like the colours of the vole and the muted colour in the water makes him stand out well.

Nice one. :toast:

Excellent first try, light seem, as said, not too bad but the image could be a bit sharper,

Hmm the lack of sharpness maybe due to the fact my website is resizing it on the fly to keep it within the 720 pixel limit. Looks like its at 24% size.

Forgot to mention cropped to 4/3

You should have said your name to the guy wearing the grey fleece, jeans with the binos (with his wife) - you would have got a bit more information

 i'll drop my name more often in the future

I'll drop you a PM, as i'm puzzled by a few things about them...

Hi Paul,

The sharpness has been mentioned, I think if it is possible that a lower view point would be better. You are lucky to have found these little critters as I have not seen any on the local waterways where I live. I look forward to seeing more image's in the future

Regards

Light looks good to me but I see what others mean about a bit more USM. Nice shot

You were obviously pushing the limits of the available light here, but you need to be shooting with a minimum shutter speed of 1/320s to have a chance of getting a sharp image in my experience. Better light next time, eh?

Abit more USM as said. But its still a cracking shot :toast:

Nice first try at these adorable creatures, Like Phil Shaw I think the sofness is caused by a little motion blur, you really do need to have as high a shutter speed as possible for things moving on water, (I do not believe that USM can bring back sharpness) I realise you were at the max possible, so look forward to more in better light...

The subject movement has unfortunately taken the edge off of the sharpness, which is a shame, but hopefully this will be the first of many future encounters to come.
