I was asked to do an exhibit/show in May for our local art gallery. How many images are normally displayed and what sizes. As of now I have about 30 images matted and framed at 11X14 and 3 larger images. I plan on framing about 10 more large ones and maybe another 20 or 30 11 X14 that I already have matted. Does that sound about right? I've only done a few formal exhibits while I was the only artist so I am fairly new to doing this. Any help would be appreciated.

Josh, that sounds like a TON of art. I'd contact the gallery and ask them to show you the exact space you'll have available. It's way better to go down there and assess things first hand. There's no "normal" number or size of images. It all depends on the wall space. Are they giving you the whole gallery to display your art?

Thanks for your respones Steve. Yes, I will have the entire gallery to myself. They hire me occasionally to do photography presentations so I am pretty familiar with the gallery itself and there is plenty of room to display my work.

I would talk to them about their clientel and what sizes they normally sell, if they are a commercial gallery.
I would do a couple of very large showcase pieces, maybe in the 20x30 to 30x40 range. If everything is the same size and shape, sometimes it gets ignored or all blends together. By mixing in other sizes and shapes, it can increase the visual interest.
I had about 50 images in my last big show ranginf from 2' x 4' down to 8" x 8", I think it was a 30 x 40 gallery space. It really depends on how you layout the walls. Do images overlap above and below, or are evenly spaced in single rows. I would sketch it out on paper, or with thumbnails in photoshop or other program until you get a good feel for the space and how to tell your story.

Hi Josh
I'm a regular exhibitor at our local art gallery. I have a wall that hold about 8 20X30 frames (16x20 images) and it appears very crowded. The only reason is that I'm not there very much and just want to show the range of my images. Your art gallery should be able to advise you on how many frames images to show. BS
