Nice one, perhaps a tad oversharpened, but a nice setting with a great bg, however it does seem to have a bit of a blue cast.... try levels, select the blue channel and slide the middle slider to the right to reduce it, just tried it, reduce the input level to 0.79, and the colours improve greatly...

I too noticed the blue cast. Was it the cold ? Is that a fly on its beak, or debris?

David,
The debris on the beak is chaff from the seed it was feeding on. I may clone it out.
It's always cold when I'm sitting photographing birds

The chaffinch looks good.
I quite like the moss on the perch but feel the bright, OOF area of wood in the middle draws the eye a bit. I'm sure it would be better in softer light and perhaps selectively darkening that area a little might help.
It certainly shows the chaffinch's colours off well.

Another good clean image of the Chaffie. A bit cool looking on my monitor though (blue cast).

Nice shot Rob, glad you enjoyed Bolton Abbey despite the weather.

Striking image but agree re the bluish cast. Should be easy to fix

Certainly stands out in its surroundings.
Blue cast has been mentioned, but for me the perch is a bit too dominant and messy here.
Sharpening looks just a touch over done.
Cheers,

Great backgroound and ditto bird. Nits have been mentioned.

The bird itself looks really good with a pleasing, alert and upright pose.
Not that keen on the perch though as I find it just a little too distracting, especially the lighter area just below the bird.
Still an attractive portrait despite the perch.

11 repliesOne from Bolton Abbey at the weekend.
Had a cold hour waiting for elusive Dipper, perched on a mossy rock, before the rain drove me to the cafe without any decent photos.
However, found this chap most obliging.
Not sure I've got my shapening technique right, comments greatly appreciated.

Looks like I need to move to the UK
