Split Creek
I posted this over in ESS but the overall feel was that it was too dark...which I agreed on....I tried to lighten it up a bit but I am thinking now that the water may not have enough texture.....

I would appreciate your thoughts and comments please!

Pretty much what you've said. The water appears too bright for my tastes.

Darren, this is a prime example of an image that could use "masks" to include/exclude areas of an image to modify.
In this example you could easily create a mask of the water area an invert it to select all the darker parts of the image. You could then create a curves layer to lighten up that part of the image only.

You should bring this image by the house and we can work it.

I'll agree with Erik's suggestions but also add to clone out that log coming in from the left. It just sticking into the photo like that bugs me.

Man that's a tough call on that pic, I can see the darkness being an issue in the trees but if you lighten it up you might lose that awesome lighting effect on just the edges of the branches that I think is so outstanding and cool. The object lower left is annoying but if I visualize it gone I'm not sure, I feel that side of the photo may lose it's anchor and become very bland... wow, I don't know

Thanks Eric.....Ill email ya and we can set up a time to work this image....

I dont know much about masks or what they do so this would be a great learning experience for me. I will bring the master TIFF file.

Marc, I understand about the log in the lower left but since it does point in the direction of the water I feel that its ok and keeps the flow going....

Or....we could all do a group hike and all bring back new versions of this scene....I would like to get across the stream and up the other side as I feel that would have some very strong comps also...... its a crap shoot!!!!

The image is a real good comp...but I'm with Mark...that log kinda bugs me.

I'd get the mask lesson from Eric.... masks will blow your mind once you get the concept. The ability to change the color of just an element or area in your image or to brighten just a part of your image will change your post production many times fold.

I have to agre with others, the Log should be cloned out for the cleanest image. If you do it right, the water texture will still show the flow and by lowering the exposure of the water, you 'll get even more texture which will make it even better. That log doesn't add anything to me and distracts quite a bit. Just my humble
