Anyone know much about this area? It's in San Juan county, south of Moab, but I haven't been able to find much information on the web about it other than a couple people died there some years ago.
Thanks, Bill. Not sure if I'll be going out there or not as I'm waiting on a phone call from a magazine who asked if I could do a shoot down there this weekend. This late in the game I'm thinking I won't be going but it doesn't hurt to do the research ahead of time!
Just learned that they are actually looking for photos from Lockhart Canyon, which is a small tributary canyon in Lockhart Basin. Looks like I'm in for a rough ride.
I've been through that area and there are some spots where you feel exposed, but the trail surface is pretty good -- this was back in 2004. My Tacoma made it through with zero issues, just have good maps -- obviously

If you don't already have it, you need a copy of Charles Well's Moab backcountry roads book. It includes a complete description of Lockhart including GPS waypoints. I haven't run Lockhart myself. I might be out there in May with my jeep club. If you want to run it, I'm sure we could organize a run.
Thanks, Mel. I haven't heard back from NG so I doubt I'll need to shoot the canyon this weekend. It looks pretty cool and I might head down to check it out some time over the next couple weeks. If not, I may take you up on your offer. Let me know when you'll be here!
Wow Darren, you are the man! Even if I don't get the commission to shoot this story it looks like a killer spot to spend some time. Thanks so much for sharing the description and photos. With all the tamarisks in that area I'll bet it's gorgeous in the fall when they are golden in color.
As to be expected, Darren's got it nailed! I have rode (ridden...whatever) Lockhart from north to south and south to north on a dirtbike. Its a long haul and nobody around to help if you get in a jam. What ever you do, ride it with friends.
BTW, the only tamarisks I ever saw were on the spur trail down to the Colorado River.

Let me know if your vehicle survives the trip.
