When I travel, I always take this handy little CD burner (Apacer) with me and a few blank CD's. Easy to copy and send back home. I now am determined to make my travel load ligher and want to try out to copy directly from my Nikon 200 to a smal 2.5" external drive. I got the right cable, connect, nut nothing happens. So the question...how do I copy from the D200 to the external drive? thx

unless there's a utility in the camera software ( a menu item for downloading, which I don't believe there is), you'll need something to initiate the download. That's what things like the Epson P2000, Flashtrax, etc. do. An external hard drive by itself can't do it. You need software and some sort of interface.

Wow. I went to check on the price of an Apacer unit that could write DVDs and it appears they're all discontinued! Too bad, burning CDs afield was an almost perfect solution for my photography trips. I was looking for a DVD unit because I'm moving on to 1 gB (and more) flash cards. There is a Delkin unit that would do what I want. It is called a DVD-Burnaway.

I hesitate to go the portable hard drive route because of risk of losing many gB of images if the device gets damaged (most likely in my case) or lost/stolen. With a media burner I can create duplicate copies as cards get filled. I can also buy more storage a many drug stores (CD-Rs next to the batteries). Of course, this doesn't address your question. Sorry, can't help there.
