Thinking about heading down to Moab the weekend of the 17th. As it has been forever since I was there, was wondering what type of conditions I can expect. I have never been there outside of the summer season, looking for a little help. Thanks
Not sure about the weather conditions, but I hear that the Law in that town is tough on Coloradoans...unless you have some chocolate malts handy...
Actually - we hung around on the San Rafael Swell about this time two years ago, at Goblin Valley SP and Hanksville; they're at about the same elevation as Moab. It was warm during the day - low 70s - and maybe 30s at night. I suspect you could catch anything from snow to 80s this time of year.
Rick is right about the weather in March. It's usually quite nice but we've had snow even in June. Snow in March is highly likely, though it's rarely enough to do anything more than provide for some awesome photo conditions. Most likely you'll enjoy chilly nights, cool to warm days and blue skies. I think that is the marathon weekend so expect town to be crowded, campgrounds and hotels to be full.
If you do head out this way let me know if you're interested in meeting up to shoot/hike.
I have heard about the Law in them parts and was hoping the Law would be around to give a few pointers cause I am looking for any Edge I can get when I am down there
I've had some mixed experience with March weather. Last year, it was terrible when I was there in mid-march -- cloudy and rainy. The year before it was worse, cold and snowy. However, I've also spent a week out there in mid-March when it was around 70 and sunny almost the entire time, go figure Basically, I would keep an eye on the forcast and see what you should expect. It is a great time of year for fewer crowds and interesting weather. This year, I decided to wait until April -- since I got hosed the last 2 trips in March.
The law will in fact be around! I don't even go back to work until the 24th, so my schedule is wide open. Email me if you have any questions or need some suggestions, Joe.
The great thing about Moab is that even if it's cloudy, there's still lots to shoot. The grand vistas may not be at their prime but all these little side canyons provide plenty of interesting material. And, the storms usually end up providing for some killer storm light and reflections.
