I will be installing a second internal hard drive in my desktop computer today. My "c" drive is getting very near full. I do not have a lot of photos stored on this drive, I have an external drive for that. Now the questions. I want to move PS CS2 and my other photo related programs to the new drive. 1) Can I just move the programs or will I have to remove them and reinstall them? I would rather just move them since that would keep the updates. 2)I plan to create a partition to be be use as a scratch disk for PS. How large should the partition be to be useful but not to large to just be wasting space? Also how do I designate it as the scratch disk in PS. I have read a little about creating a scratch disk but this will be my first time doing it.
Well thats enough(or to much) for one thread.
1) Unfortunately it will be much safer to reinstall the applications rather than copy them. There's potentially a lot of information in configuration files and the Windows registry that will point to the old location. My recommendation is to leave the programs where they are and only move data files to make some space.
2) The scratch size should be several times the size of the largest images you plan to have open concurrently. Mine is set to about 15GB just to be safe and it has worked well for me so far. Keep in mind that adding physical memory (unless you're already at the PS limit) can also have a significant improvement.
3) You can designate up to 4 scratch drives in Edit -> Preferences -> Plug-Ins & Scratch Disks

I agree with Guy. The best setup if you can make it work is to house all of your programs on one drive (C:) and all of your personal data on another. If you need to upgrade the size of C: then you can buy a new drive, and use a cloning application to copy the existing drive to your new drive. Then shut down and switch out the drives and boot.
As to why I do this:
If god forbib you lost the C: drive, you would have to reinstall windows, which means that you would have a blank registry. That would mean that you would have to reinstall all of your applications so that they could be recorded in the registry. I use Acronis True image to keep a backup of my application drive, and I use a synchronizing application to keep a backup of my data drive. My backups are stored on a 1TB buffalo terrastaion, but its essentially the same as an external drive.
You can get better performance from your scratch disk being on a seperate drive from the application drive, so I don't see any problem with you directing it to that location.

Thanks to you both Guy and Mel.
While I'm not totally lost around a computer ( but close )
Mel's suggestion of cloning the old drive to the new larger drive sounds like the easiest way to do what I need.
I did install the new drive I must not have got the drives connect properly when I tried to boot up I got a "Disk Read" error. and it failed to boot. I even tried disconnecting the new drive from the cable and just leave the old drive connected and got the same error. I took the two device cable back out and hooked up the old drive with the old one device cable and it booted just fine. I had the jumper on the new drive in the slave position and it was connected on the cable in the second spot ( the connector in the middle or the cable ). My work week started back today so I probably wont have time to work on it again untill the first of next week.
What would be the benefit of having 4 scratch disks? Using your 15GB scratch disk as an example, would the 4 scratch disks each be 3.75GB for a total of 15GB, or 15GB each?
