Here is the DPpreview summary of the above, in case the above link doesn't work:

It makes the post below on the Canon 1200 f5.6 look like a toy. And to think, I'd be happy with just a 500 f4...

Looks like it might just fit in the bed of my pickup

I like that handle. It would stil be hell to hike 10 miles with this thing.

Which model Gitzo to use?

LOL!! I love the built-in handle. i assume it also comes with a dolly?

Any guesses as to cost? Maybe 30 of us could get together to buy it and trade it off between us?
Yikes.

It's nice to see that something is being done with all those old Civil War cannon barrels laying around...

Sandy, great idea for a follow-up to the Roving Camera project - Roving Telephoto! Unfortunately, nobody would be too willing to pass this one along to the next person!

I don't think that's the handle, I think that's the grip for engaging/unengaging the M/AF like some Sigmas have....

Hysterical! LOL! I can hardly manage a day's shooting lugging a 300/2.8 around. Perhaps it comes with a llama... or a self propelled wagon. Oh, brother.

Catherine, I think a serf propelled wagon might be better. It is going to take two people just to lift that thing onto a tripod.

It's not HSM, so it won't AF with my Nikon D40. Dammit!

No, I don't have a D40 and will never have the lens...

I spent five weeks in Florida this Winter. Walked many miles with my Sigma 800mm on a big Gitzo with a full Wimberly head on the right sholder and some times another body on the Nikon 200-400 VR on a strap on the other sholder and all ways with my seven pound weiner dog stuck in my jacket. I think Sigma should send me one to field test. I have never shot a Sigma body but if their cameras are as good as their lens maby I should have one to go with that new lens. I do like the idea of a carry handle. For now I just want a Sigma 300-800 f5.6
