Ok I finally spent some time working an image from the Dream Lake trip. I blended of cource, dodged and burnt and made some corrections in an attempt to pull something woth while from my efforts at the lake.
I think this looks much better. The highlights are under control and things look natural. If there's room to open up the shadows just a little - in the trees mostly - that would benefit the image, imo. Compositionally, I'd wish for a little more room at the top; just enough to keep the tops of the left-most trees from getting clipped. The warm hues reflected on the ice are a really nice touch.

Definitely better, but like Rick said, it could still use some work.
One of the oddities I see is on the far right. There's a snowbank getting hit by sun, and it appears the trees behind it are receiving the same light, yet the trees hold almost no detail. I think the forests in this shot are generall about a full f-stop darker than I'd like them to be. The portion of the photo that holds the lake is gnarly. Very cool.

This is nicer, James. The water and ice is great. I agree about not chopping the left-hand trees if the original has the room.
