Male Chaffinch
Hi Guys

Picture of a chaffinch taken late this afternoon
this pic is about 50% crop possibly a bit more

Canon 1DS, 600mm f/4, 1.4TC,
ISO100, F/8, 1/40sec, spot metering, RAW.

C&C welcome

Got my 1Ds back from Fixation in London
Something about back and front focusing, they adjusted the focusing plate back to canons spec of zero, (all double dutch to me)
I think i know what they are saying,
Could not seem to get sharp pictures, and as others get pin sharp, this is just a dream to me at the moment.
I had the 600mm lens checked as well,
I believe it was me at first, then i noticed i was getting better shots with my 350d,
now i know the camera is working fine as well as the lens, i know its me,

I read Andrew Shephards thread about the 500mm lens problem and understand fully his frustration
With renewed vigor i going to try my lens set to IS mode 2 and camera setting to A1 Servo, hope to see some improvment.

A problem that keeps croping up is the f/stop - distance factor
Is there any table out there to say with what lens you have to what f/stop you choose, which will give you the focal area for sharpness
must be something out there to help
This is one area I am truely lacking just cant get my head around.
At the moment its all hit and miss for me

Thanks in advance

Hello

Your image certainly isn't 'popping' on my screen. Is it sharpened? What was you r workflow for this pic?

Try this as well re. DOF

You sound pretty discouraged Tony. Hope things start to come right. Your chaffinch is a nice pic. but somehow looks a bit over-processed whilst not producing any "pop" as mentioned above. A bit more contrast via curves (a slight "s" curve), and a touch of saturation makes all the difference. Also I think you should assign an sRGB profile for best viewing on the forum. I played with it for a couple of minutes and although not brilliant it did make a difference.
