Goldfinch - 1st Shot Canon 30d-70-200 2x
This is one of my 1st shots with my new Canon gear, Canon 30D + 70-200mm f2.8IS + 2.0x II Extender, I really wanted to check out how the 2.0x II Extender performs with this lens wide open @ f/5.6 @400mm, I must say I am fairly happy although was a little soft,

applied smart sharpen in PS CS2. about 30% of full frame, so I guess would be 70% crop?

EXIF: 1/400th, f/5.6, ISO400, 0.67 EV, @400mm.

Cheers

It's not too bad given its wide open.

As it is here it's not sharp enough for me, but applying a bit more sharpening to it does make it better. There is a fair amount of detail in the feathers.

You might get better results, stopping down one stop. I find that improves things when using the 2x TC on the 500/4.5.

Well fair play for trying this out wide open with a 2x! Wouldn't even contemplate it to be honest. Try stopping down to f8. I'm pretty sure it will make a difference to the sharpness. Be interested to see the difference. As presented, this is a bit soft for me, and to be honest, how i'd expect the image to look using the techs you've described. You don't say if it's full frame or cropped? (i forget too most of the time!)

Greame/Richard, I agree is a bit soft, I didn't want to go overboard with the sharpening,

Graeme the pick is about 70% cropped out so there is 30% left. I did try a few f/8 and f/11 pics and they were sharp IMO, I will post one tomorrow. I have updated my original post.

Cheers

Hi Nick, you went for the 30D then?

Not bad, i can see the lack of sharpness, but i looks more like lack of contrast to me. Also the branch/twig, seems to have some "halo" effect too? Goldfinches are such great subjects expect to see more from you soon.
