I'm computer shopping and am entertaining purchasing a Mac. Is the newly redisigned Imac a good choice for photo work (serious hobbyist), or is Mac Pro the better way to go? I'm a PC user presently. The imac is available as a nice 24", but the computer itself doesn't seem to have the ability to be readily upgraded (3 gb is max RAM capacity it can be equipped with) vs the mac pro. If anyone wants to expand my question to become Mac or PC, feel free....I'm not completely sold on the Mac idea "yet". No one in my community sells or troubleshoots Macs

I've got to fess up. Though we use a couple of Mac Pros (Mac LCD screens) and a G4 (LaCie monitor) constantly for photo editing in our business, the G4 is going to be replaced with a 24" iMac. A couple of friends have them, and I'm greatly impressed. The savings between buying that or a Mac Pro and a comparable monitor are huge, far outweighing the small gains they offer. I'd rather spend the difference in price on something other than the next computer.

The only reason I can see for not owning one is for proof review with clients in our studio. For that we have a swivel mount on the LCD of the MacPro, allowing us to flip it to vertical when reviewing vertical images. In our experience bigger views sell bigger prints, and it's a shame to use only half the screen when it's horizontal and the image is vertical.

Apple is about ready to replace the existing iMacs with a newer design.

I’ve been using a 24” iMac since October, and I love it. The screen is bright and clear. Stepping up from a Powerbook 15” was a big jump, and I find it hard to be patient with the PB when I travel now. The iMac is quick (I have 2G of RAM) and responsive.

If you’re concerned about all the old Windows software, there are two optionis now to run it on the Mac models. Apple ships with Boot Camp, that allows you to boot up directly to Windows on a separate partition. Or you can use Parallels, an app that runs Windows natively within the Mac OS. So you can bring over your old software and upgrade when you want to, not all at once.
