I'm interested in purchasing a black backgroud to use for some floral shooting. Any suggestions on what to buy and how to set it up would be greatly appreciated.

Zandall....black mat board is easy and cheap. I also have some black velvet that can be a it more flexible.
I use the methods Bill suggested. I also use the black zip out lining of a winter coat.

I buy a yard of moleskin at the fabric store, nice matte finish that will not reflect light. It also will not wrinkle when folded in your bag. I sew a casing in one end to recieve a dowel rod. With that and twop plamps I've not found a set up that I could not rig. The moleskin is eight dollars a sq yard but worth every penny.
Another good option is Black Flocked Paper . You really want a dead black. Any sheen at all will sometimes be visible. I taped a piece of this onto a piece of coroplast that is small enough to fit in my pack. Actually to two pieces of coroplast hinged with gaffer tape so I have a background that will stand on it's own.
All that to get the blackest of black backgrounds, which some people really dislike!
