great lens. Sharp, fast AF. I don't think you can go wrong with this choice. I would, however, recommend replacing the tripod collar with the Kirk collar

GErard, the AF-S 300mm f/4 is a super lens. We have had one since it was introduced. Normally, ours is coupled to a TC-14E teleconverter. And, under most conditions is will even autofocus with the TC-20E on our D1X and F5's. We don't have a TC-17E but suspect that it would autofocus just fine.

The lens is very sharp. While most of our shots are taken with the use of a tripod, with good technique it can be hand held. For that, though, we wish it had VR. But that would increase the cost.

Nevertheless, the AF-S 300mm f/4 is a great lens even after dropping it three times with no ill affects! The D1X bottom got really dinged up on the second drop, though, and required service.

Gerard,

Third vote for the AF-S 300mm. I was just using it this morning with the TC-17E, focusses fine with out without the TC. Depending on the conditions, it may hunt a bit more with the TC in low light. This was a surfing competition in good light, so not a problem.

Initially I was using it with the supplied tripod collar. I now have the Kirk collar that Rod recommends above. It makes a big diffence.

Cheers,

AndrŽ

I'm still using it with the original tripod collar and have no problems. I might replace the collar eventually just to join the club and see what I've been missing, but am in no rush. I also use the TC-17E with it. Incidentally, I've used in manually on an F3 as well as AF on an F100. I just ordered a D40 to cross the digital divide and am glad to know it's fully functional there as well.
