Hi all,

Do any of you know of good guide books to both UK bird and mammal footprints?

I'm seeing a lot of prints in the mud along the river bank and don't know what they are. There are two sets in particular that I think maybe a Fox and the other an Otter, I will try and get a couple of shots tomorrow and post them and see if anyone know's what they are.

TIA

Hi Rob,

I have recently purchased "Animal Tracks and Signs" by Bang and Dahlstrom, published by OUP - ISBN 0199299978
I've been quite impressed, it contains most European Mammals and some birds and includes sections on Footprints, Feeding signs, Animal remains, Droppings and others. I've not used the book in anger, but it is an interesting read. It has a forward by Ray Mears, in fact his name is more prominant on the front of the book than the author's!!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for responses so far. Alan looking at those tracks I would'nt say it's a Fox or an Otter  . Makes getting a good book all that more important I guess. I'll post them tomorrow and see what you guys think.

Rob,

I can recommend a book called A Field Guide in Colour to Animal Tracks ISBN 1-85605-442-X Price is £7.99 (Softcover).
It covers all sorts including bird and mammal tracks, dwellings, meal remains, bone remains, track measurements, behaviour, etc, etc, etc.

hi robam,

try getting hold of a book called nature detective by hugh falkus, it's well old and lot's of the methods he used to use aren't at all PC these days but it's very interesting reading and a fascinating insight into the good old days. good drawings of most british mammal footprints if i remember rightly. not sure where you would get a copy these days but worth a hunt around.
