HERONS are Back--BATH OHIO
Here in Bath Ohio,( about 30 miles S. of Cleveland west of Akron) we have one of the largest Blue Heron heronies in the state. Last year I estimate there were over 300 birds.

The males arrived about a week ago and the females are expected in about a a week to 10 days. We had that warm spell and I think that's what brought the males back. Another is predicted for next week.

(Google herons bath ohio for lot more info)

The location is on Bath Road, between Riverview & Akron-Peninsula Road, very close to the CVNP. Shooting can be a challenge since the heronry is right next to the road, protected by a high fence, and there are lots of power lines. The ONLY viewing area faces south. If the early AM light is orange etc, you can silhouette the birds nicely. The afternoon offers more light on their heads than in the AM. if its cloudy the white sky really doesn't help. You will need at least a 400 ( marginal) up.

If you have further questions shoot me an email.

Hooray to the return of the Herons....it's good to see them again, even if only in pictures! I have been seeing Sandhill Cranes here and there as they make their way back north through southern MI.

Thanks for sharing yet another sure sign of Spring, Jack!

Jack, I really like that first shot, the branches and angle are really interesting.

These are great shots. I like particularly like the first one. What lens did you use? I was out hiking yesterday on the Ice Age Trail (Bloomer, Wisconsin) and noticed the Herons were back and building nests. Unfortunately I couldn’t get close enough for pictures without disturbing the birds.
