Hello everyone! OK, first, I'd like to warn you, this is the first of probably too many questions! It's road trip time!!!!
My buddy Jerry and I are heading to Utah for a 5 day photo trip, leaving on March 29th. This is my sort of last little hurrah of a photo trip for a while, as my first child will be showing up around May 5th! The plan is to head out after work that Thursday night, and we figured that Colorado National Monument would be a good stopping point, especially since neither of us have really spent any time there. The next day we'll be Utah bound. But, that leaves a sunrise opportunity open.
So, I guess what I'm looking for is a couple things. First, advice on places to camp, preferably for free, and more so, advice on places that would be good sunrise shoots this time of year. Was actually planning on trying the road to Rattlesnake canyon for the camping part, since its outside the park boundaries, but up for other options.
Oh, and post pics of the locations if you got 'em, thats always a bonus! Thanks in advance! More questions to come!

Brent,
Sorry no CNM advice. But congratulations on the new anticipated baby! It sounds like you are going on your trip just in the nick of time.
Regardless of what people say there is still nature photography 'Life' after children. After having our third child (now 1 y/o) and dragging them all over kingdom come last summer for wildflowers, my wife 'asked' that I go with some of the guys instead to do fall colors. I graciously accepted her offer Just make sure and give her a weekend away with the girls every now and then.
Please post a pic of the new baby once you get back and recover a little.

I plan to know the place like the back of my hand in a few years, sorry can't help you now.
If you head towards rattlesnake I'd sure like to hear what that's like.
Congratulations! Yes there is life after ankle biters as Derek said. Even photography! Just less of it, as I'm sure you've heard from all the new parents around here.
I'm turning the big 4-0 on May 6 and my youngest son will be 6 on May 10, good month for a birthday!
We'll have to get together. My 40th is on May 16th. As many of us already know (you know who you all are ) 1967 was a great year for photographers!.

Brent, can't speak for CNM but I am heading to Utah on the 30th, are you heading to Moab? Maybe we can meet for a sunrise or something.

First off, congras As far as your question, I was out there last spring and I remember there being some places to camp along the access road after you are out of the Monument --but there is no camping allowed for the last 1.5 miles before you get to the arches. Most of the arches face south (I believe) so you just have to find one you like. I belive there are about a half dozen bigger arches. Unfortuantely I didn't get up there in time for sunrise -- its a longer drive from town than I thought -- so I didn't get any really interesting shots. The time frame you are going should be better, when I went it was blazing hot and not a cloud to be seen.
