I am looking into getting this lens as I want to try macro this summer. If any of you have one for sale or maybe even suggest a better lens then please let me know.
Optics have to be flawless, and I would like the lens body to be A1 as well please.
Regards
Rob

Cracking lens this - one of my favouirites and I use it a lot for portrait work too so well worth hunting down. If you've a full frame body though the 150mm SIGMA or 180mm SIGMA/Canons really do give extra pull which for butterflies in particular I find very helpful for what this is worth.

Hi Rob
I would also recommend a slightly longer focal length for in the field macro work. The sigma 150mm is well regarded and is ideal on a full frame or 1.25x crop camera. The extra working distance is good when approaching small critters.
All of the 100mm macros from sigma/canon/tamron are well regarded, the Tamron often rates as the sharpest of the bunch but the Canon has the edge on AF speed.
Just to add a little... I too would recommend the longer F/L such as the 150/180, just to get that extra working distance, as long as the subject mag is the same on the sensor then for any given aperture DoF is nigh on identical whether you shoot with a 50mm or a 180mm.
The big advantage the Canon 100mm has over the other makes is not so much focus speed (for close up work you will be 99% mf) but the fact that it is internal focusing which means the lens doesn't extend when focusing..
