Frame filling with 500 Nikkor

Can anyone tell me what the smallest type of bird I can expect to fill a frame with using a 500 mm Nikon lense using a 1.5 crop digital body at minimum focusing distance (about 16 ft.) What I'm getting at is whether a 1.4 tc is needed to shoot warblers, kinglets and other similarly sized birds. Thanks for your help.

You are assuming, of course, that you can get that close to the birds. I don't know about the Nikon 500mm but I shoot the Canon 500mm sometimes on my 20D which is a 1.6x crop body. Frankly, I find it necessary to own both the 1.4x and 2x Canon teleconverters when shooting small birds. You just can't always get close to small birds so it is better to be prepared for any shooting distance.

Thanks Tom. I was hoping that at least in a best case scenario a 500 was capable of filing the frame without a teleconverter.

If you can get closer, one way to further fill the frame is by using a short extension tube, maybe 25mm or so.

Hi Gary

I'm using the 500 f4 afs mk2 and for anything smaller than say a blackbird(american robin size) a tc14 is needed or the extension tubes.

Thankyou Craig, as well as Rod and Tom. Looks like I'll need a 1.4.
