Carduelis carduelis
Had another opportunity to photograph these at the weekend, but with not such nice light and a different BG. Composition may seem odd, but I can't add canvas at the bottom (lack of ps skills) and there was a distraction on the the right so have composed it pretty big in the frame for some.

Comments appreciated :toast:

Well Graeme the light may be a bit flat but its a sqillion times better than any goldie-shot I've got - he's tied for top of my bogey bird list with male chaff and yellowhammer :frown: :frown:

Adding to canvass is pretty straightforward:

go Image/Canvass size
add figures for extra height and width (make sure you keep the 'relative' tick box checked)
select clone stamp tool and pick a brush size (make the brush hardness low - I use 0% for bg)
Put your brush over the area of colour & tone you'd like to paint WITH and Alt+leftclick then move the brush to the new bit of canvass and left click - BINGO - the more you click the more colour gets added.
When you click you'll notice a '+' shaped cursor flash over the spot you alt+clicked, move the mouse and click - you'll see the cursor flash again in a new position and the colour you've just added will be from the area where the cursor has just flashed, if you want to add a different colour just alt+click elsewhere on the canvass - you'll soon get the hang of it :wavey: :wavey: :wavey:

Best Regards

Andy

Andys advicewill certainly help this imho Graeme, but it's a nice capture none the less.

Nice one... like the over the shoulder look...

An even easier way to add canvass particularly if the bg is fairly even..., here in the canvas size dialogue add a little to the bottom, grab the rectangular selection tool and select the bit of bg just above the added canvas, hit ctrl T, grab one of the handles and stretch that little bit to cover your added canvas... done, you can add a touch of blur if you want.

Note that there is a bug in CS2 with 16 bit files that will leave a fine dark line that you can clone out, this doesn't happen with an 8 bit file.

All the best

nice sharp eye and good pose, like ou say a bit tight for my tastes but I know a lot of people like their birds big in the frame so simply a matter of tastes I suppose. Never managed to get a good shot of these myself so nice one.

Thanks for all the comments, and thanks for the cloning and adding canvas help. Much appreciated. Top and bottom addition is generally ok, it's more tricky on the sides where the perch is that I struggle. Any tips on that without making cloning noticable?
