Vista mangling metadata?

Doing my homework on my next computer system........

I have read that Windows new Vista O.S. strips metadata from digital files. Yikes!

Can any of you computer gurus verify if this is true?

Thanks!

Dave, I can't confirm 100% as I have not personally worked with CS3 or with Vista, but at a recent camera club meeting it was brought up that the meta data doesn't move over properly. I can ask if there's a fix. I can't remember if he said there was one or not... I'd be happy to check for you though.

Using only the Windows Picture gallery, I uploaded a card to my new Vista endowed laptop, then transferred it to an external hard drive, then hooked up the hd to my desktop and brought it up in DPP. At this point all the metadata was indeed stripped. However I'm thinking once I install a photo processing program that supports my camera on the Vista laptop and load my photos directly into that program the problem will be gone, I hope! Currently, Canon does not have support drivers for Vista but they are working on it.

Can't decide yet what program I'm going to use on the laptop. I've though about just installing Lightroom but keep hearing various complaints about its design, so now I'm thinking of getting Breezebrowser which I have only heard good things about. I don't see a need to load Photoshop CS2 on it since I wouldn't use the laptop for anything but deciding between keepers and losers, which is what Breezebrowser is supposed to be great for.

I have been ingesting my images with a program called ImageIngester and I add meta data upon the copy of the files to my vista laptop. I have not seen any problems with loss of meta data, but maybe since I use a couple of different meta data templates, I will not see the same behaviour as others.

I am curious what meta data is missing?

Image Ingester is supported by a Boulder programmer-photographer Marc Rochkind and his website for distribution of II is ImageIngester - he distributes ImageIngester free and he has just released a Pro version that has a small fee.

Scott, the metadata stripped was everything the camera normally attaches to the file, including ISO,shutter speed, f stop, lens, focal length, white balance,etc.etc. and the image file number the camera creates. When brought up in Vista the images are numbered 01,02,03,etc.
