I was camping on the Buffalo River last weekend and met this fellow on highway 21 just south of the Buffalo river bridge. I think the turn off to the cabin is just past this spot. I got some good elk shots that day.

Hi Glenn, this guy may be a guard but he'd better be on his guard if a truck comes wide around this turn! He might be better served hanging out in the valley with a bunch of other spikes! Thanks for sharing.

Wayne,
A truck did come around that corner and had to make a quick stop to keep that from happening. The elk just stood there for a few more seconds. Then he a couple of others went on across. I got real close and got a few shots with my 70 - 300 lens. (I got about 40-50 yards from them) They started gettin real nervous so I left. Other cars began to stop as they often do here and the elk left. You might know about what the locals call the "tourist elk". About 50 hang around Boxley Valley and Ponca and don't care about people stopping to look. I don't know why they have those spikes this time of the year. I thought they had lost them by now.

Yeh, I agree about the spikes, kind of strange. I'm sure if these elk were in the Rockies that the antlers would be gone by now. It was my understanding that bull elk dropped their racks in early winter, after the rut. That way they were less distinguishable from the cows during winter preditation. Someone may know different.
