Lay of the Land
This is a photograph of Landscape Arch from a nearby entrada fin at sunrise in Arches National Park. I was trying to get a unique perspective by adding a foreground element to this highly photographed icon. Just after this shot, the quick release on my almost brand new Arca Swiss B-1 siezed up. Fortunately, it broke with the camera base plate stuck onto the head, so I could still shoot the rest of the weekend, although it did make things a bit more cumbersome. Pentax 67ii, 45mm, Velvia 100.

Perhaps one of the finest LA images I've ever seen. Nice going!

Ever since the Park Service closed off direct access to the arch, it's been tough to find a decent angle. You found it, though!! Lovely shot! :toast:

Best LA shot I have seen. Only way to make it better would be clouds. Terrific job on a uncommon shot of a common subject.

Very nice.

Congrats on a great shot, Steve! That's really awesome!

I tried backtracking on the fin about halfway up the Devil's Garden trail, but the perspective was a top-down one. You can tell it's an arch, but it doesn't really look like Landscape Arch.

Great work all around Steve - finding an uncommon perspective and then executing extremely well. The light, the foreground interest and the detail... they take the "pressure" off the arch to carry the scene, which makes the arch and its orientation through the frame all the more successful.

Excellent angle with nice light.... good perspective. Bad luck on the tripod, but seems like you managed to continue shooting. Will be at Moab in a month for the Moab Photo Symposium... anyone else going?

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone. Arches is a difficult place to get different perspectives without walking all over the cryptobiotic soils. Unfortunately, I did that a little bit the first night a got there before I read about it in the park service newspaper. Fortunately, I automatically walked along drainages and slick rock as much as possible, so my impact wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Woah... great shot! Having stood in that same spot trying to pick a composition, I am really impressed with your unique and dynamic composition. I was not nearly as successful!
