I drove down to the Garden this morning to try getting some sunrise shots and to my horrer, saw that the right-hand camel head had apparently fallen off sometime last night! Nearby residents recalled hearing a large crashing sound around 2:30 this morning, but the full impact of what had transpired didn't hit until early this morning. Fortunately, no one had been hurt, as the debris landed well off the trail on the east side of North Gateway Rock. This picture was taken from the visitor center parking lot.
Here's another shot taken from the main parking lot. There was a crowd of several joggers standing around the debris pile. Fortunately, park officials had closed off this rock to climbing several years ago, due to other rock falls. Otherwise, the situation could have had much worse consequences. In fact, one camel lost part of its hump a few years back. Now we face the end of an icon.
When I witnessed Balanced Rock topple over this time last year, I was a bit disappointed. But to the Kissing Camels I say good-riddance. I never much cared for those libidinous creatures anyway. It was always distracting to have them making out above me while I was trying to take pictures.
With alI the previous collapsing icon gags, this one didn't catch me.
But here's one on an announced Kodak-AT&T merger that I swallowed - hook, line & sinker:

Okay, you got me.
I did think those "dodged" places looked funny, but I totally forgot it was April Fool's Day... Doh.

Though fictional, it is still a good reminder of the ever changing nature of nature. Today's icon could be tomorrow's debris pile.
I suppose Landscape Arch was too big a PS vandalism project to consider seriously. You might have gotten a War of the Worlds scale response to that!
I have to admit you had me going...
