Does anyone know what this place is all about? It's right around the corner from my house (on the map anyway) but I can't figure out what it is, where the main entrance and/or info center is, or if there's any photo opportunities there for the common folk (like me).
They have virtually no web presence whatsoever, so that's no help.
Jason - WMAs are lands owned and managed by Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and sometimes other agencys like the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, etc. Hunting is controlled with special rules like season dates and permit requirements. I would say the "main" entrance is the hwy. 89 exit at Mayflower. If it's like most WMA's, there will usually be a sign board around somewhere with important information about ATV use etc. Most people just ignore them... As for photo ops, you'll probably be the best judge of that. Hope that helps...good luck.

Jason,
It's all part of a National Guard training facility. Here are some links that might help.
You can contact them at 501-212-5100 for more information about public access. In the past you had to register with at the Police and Fire station located at the south entrance and main post area. I'm not sure what the regulations are now, but it would be worth checking out.
My brother used to hunt there pre- 9-11-01. At that time it was easy to get in but you had to sign in and out. You could do it at the grocery store near the Mayflower side gate. I'm not sure if that gate is even open any more. Another guy I know used to say the best hunting in the state is past the "RESTRICTED AREA" signs. "sure bullets wizz by once in a while but the odds are they wont hit you"

I don't think I know where the Mayflower side gate is, and I live in Mayflower! Is/was it a manned gate?

From Mayflower you go east on hwy 89. It's about 4 or 4.25 miles east of the I-40 overpass. The AGFC Firing range is on the left and the "North Gate" (a.k.a. "Mayflower Gate") is on the right. It was not a manned gate and I'm not sure that it's open to the public anymore. You can also access the north part of the Camp Robinson WMA by driving past the Firing Range and the roads on the north side of hwy 89.
Two other Mayflower areas that I like are in Bell Slough WMA from the south entrance off hwy 65 or access the WMA from the Lake Conway spillway.

Bell Slough is one of my favorite places to go; easy to get to, close-by, and fairly unpopulated. About three weeks ago, it was booming w/wildflowers, but it's kind of backed off as of Sunday when I was there last.
I'm not sure where the spillway is that you're talking about, though.

Just east of the Mayflower I-40 overpass, turn south on Dam Road. Go to the launch parking lot at the dam. You can walk across the dam and follow the trails on the south side of the spillway. Look at Google maps satellite view of Mayflower or Google Earth to see the roads and trails. This accesses the north part of Grassy Lake and Bell Slough. There was lots of waterfowl around the dam or spillway the last time I was there.

There are are lots of whitetail deer on the WMA.
