Got Clouds? April is a great month to capture dynamic weather patterns. Let's see those images where clouds are a major element in the scene!
Posted by Jody Grigg on April 2, 2007 at 9:34 AM
Rick you should just rename it Todd Caudle month, aka Mr. Clouds.
Posted by Evan Anderman on April 2, 2007 at 12:29 PM
This was taken in Death Valley last year, I hope it is worthy.

A mesocyclone I caught in Arapahoe County, CO a few years ago.

That mesocyclone is awesome Chris! This shot was taken out on the eastern plains of Colorado in the summer. Loved the clouds and the color wasn't too shabby either.

This is one of my favorite sunsets of all time in Sedona, Arizona, which was taken about 10 years ago.
Posted by Steve Bunn on April 2, 2007 at 11:54 PM
Sorry everyone, another photo from that same sunset in Sedona...
Posted by Paul Wegemann on April 3, 2007 at 6:19 PM
From a REALLY windy day in RMNP. Had to hold the tripod down.

And from another really windy day out east of Longmont.
Posted by Todd Caudle on April 3, 2007 at 7:31 PM
One from last week in Rocky you probably already saw, but it fit the theme, so, what the hey...
Posted by Steve Bunn on April 3, 2007 at 8:11 PM
Great photos everyone. To Paul, I would say I really like your second photo more than I normally would. I'm generally not that big into B&W, not that big into plain fields and definitely not hot on oil derricks. That all being said, I really like the whole composition, even the placement of the derrick in the distance, and obviously the clouds and great lighting make the picture. The B&W conversion looks spot on. Great job on a photo I would have never thought of taking. Another lesson for me to think out of the box...

Todd, normally, serious nature photographers avoid including contrails in their images!

Steve - Thanks for the comments on my shot.

Ken - I love this perspective. Have you tried this in BW? (I'm a big fan of BW as you can see from my post)

Great images so far - keep 'em coming! Here's a Sierra Wave from a trip a couple of years ago, captured on the 4x5.

I'm loving everything here, but I always do. :toast:
Here's one from last spring right out my back door.

Well, it's clouds without a doubt.

Rick...that is a sick shot. What peak is that?

Here is a picture I took while in Arches National Park

Great photos everyone!

Thanks, Chris. I believe that's Mount Humphries, west of Bishop, CA. I was out there for a large format workshop that Guy Tal and Michael Gordon were running; that cloud hund around for much of the day, then after we all split up to shoot sunset, I perched myself on a ridge near our campsite and mostly watched in awe, taking a few exposures along the way. Then returned to camp where we enjoyed some beers around the campfire and talked about "the wave". All around a fine day!!
Posted by Grant Collier on April 4, 2007 at 9:55 PM
Wow, great shots Ken & Rick! Can Guy and Michael guarantee clouds like that every workshop? I might have to take a workshop if they can. The clouds are awesome in that shot, but the foreground is looking a little unnatural presumably because of two combined exposures. I might make the foreground a bit more contrasty and/or darken it back up some.

Here's my cloudy contribution.

Posted by Guy Tal on April 4, 2007 at 10:22 PM
Rick, that's actually Mt. Tom.
Grant, just let us know in advance to we can schedule it with the big guy

Great shots everyone! Took this one during some pretty stormy clouds. Wind was really whipping this little tree around, and I liked the movement.
Posted by Stan Rose on April 5, 2007 at 5:16 AM
Well, most of my tornado pics are from my pre-SLR days, (which means they're lame), so hopefully ill get some new ones before this month is out! Til then, ill warm up with a couple sunset shots of tornadic storms i took last spring.
Posted by Stan Rose on April 5, 2007 at 5:18 AM
...storm #1 broke our windshield with baseball sized hail, so had to shoot storm #2 from a distance!
Posted by Rick Dunn on April 5, 2007 at 9:35 AM
Thanks for the correction, Guy.

Grant - this was one exposure only on Provia. The foreground does look 'odd' however, due to the unusual lighting conditions. On film, it's extremely red and I did desaturate the reds a little. Other than that, I recall using a 2-stop grad.
Posted by Rich Long on April 5, 2007 at 12:36 PM
Not a favorite or even recent shot, but it did convert to cash for me. On film, the highlights aren't blown -looks like they may be in this home-scanned version. Yeah, I'm too lazy to change the border color or drop shadow that was already on here...

Some great shots, I really like Guy's self-portrait included in his shot, and Ken's unique cloud formations, and Chris's mesocylone shot makes me glad I wasn't in one of those buildings.

Here's an old barn I took a number of years ago on 6x7.

Wow...I'm new to NPN and there are some great photographers out there! This is an unexpected shot at Schwabacher Landing at the Tetons. I liked the reflection of the clouds in the Snake River.
