Long time no post for me. Hope everyone is doing well.
I just received a call from a guy at Morgan & Chase Publishing. They want to include me in 'Treasures of Colorado' for next year. Two questions:
1) Are they reputable?
2) Has anyone ever done this or know someone who has? What came of it?
Just curious...doing some due diligence on them. Can't find much about their book, which leads me to think it's second-tier publication. (And really, what 1st tier pub would *ever* in their right mind want me in it?? )
Good question Ken...I haven't checked my copy of that. I'll look.
I did find one (negative) thing about them from Googling, but that's it. He talked about this pub as a "coffee table" book, but it sounds more like some kind of conglomerate advertisement. I'll look at the sample and decide if I want to do it. I think it's one of those, "Hey, buy 10 copies at $39/copy and we'll put your info in it..." Probably not worth it.
Consider yourselves warned if you get a call like this...

I received a call from this guy at my business. He first congratulated me on being nominated to appear in this book. I asked him who recommended me and he had a very lame response. So, I asked how much $$$, and said no thanks. He then called me the next week with the same pitch.
Yes--all the above is true. He told me I had been nominated by a "secret shopper" which, in my case would be *very* difficult (How do you send a secret shopper to a guy who has no storefront?). They said it's "no cost to you" but you have to pre-order 10 books at $49/book, plus shipping ($520). And after the minimum order which gets you a 1/3 of a page, you can "upgrade" to larger ad size or having your name linked on their website, bringing your total cost in around at $1000-1500. Remember, this was at "no cost to you"...
So they supposedly offer a buy-back program for the books--if you don't sell in 1 year, they'll buy back at list price. That's the "no cost to you" part, but you're still stuck with the hassles of this and basically becoming a free promo outlet for a book that will have minimal, if any, impact on your business. That's the whole point of advertising in the first place...
Anyhow, I hope this write-up helps anyone else avoid the trap of Morgan-Chase publishing here. Just not a good deal for the little guy.

Thanks for any input you have,

Are they paying you for your pictures? Or are they canvassing a bunch of photographers to get "free" pictures - then hoping you all will buy the book?
Never really heard of the publisher. Are they listed in Photographer's- or Writer's Market?
