Canon FS4000 scan - red cast

I have been slowly archiving my film onto digital media using a Canon FS4000 film scanner and VueScan software.

I have been working on a film I took underwater in the Solomon Islands last year. The film is Fuji 400 Superia (I think) negative. This particular roll I took without the benefit of strobe as I had the strobe hooked up to the other camera I was using for macro. As is always the way, the most interesting subjects on this dive were wide-angle...

Most of the film scanned as expected. See this example:

However there are three frames that have come through with a terrible red cast. See this example:

I imagine the problem revolves around the fact that this is a natural light photo, and the scanner can't quite work out the white balance? Does anyone what to adjust on Vuescan to correct this problem? I've tried a bunch of different white balance settings but none seem to work.

For access to the full sized jpg's see http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/rouppe/Temporary

As an aside, once that problem is resolved, I was expecting to be able to eliminate the blue cast that you get shooting underwater (as per image 1) with photoshop manipulation. Articles I've seen on how to do it applies only to the full Photoshop version and I only have Elements 4. Can the cast be removed adequately with any version of Elements? I am prepared to upgrade to version 5 if it provides this capability.

Thanks

Andrew

Andrew, I don't think this is a white balance issue. Are the three frames in a continuous stretch of the film or scattered around the roll? This may be a wild guess, but if they are in the same stretch I would suspect a problem in the development.

Andrew-I also use a Canon FS4000 and Vuescan. My immediate reaction to your problem image is the colors are inverted. You can try to correct them in Elements 4, or rescan being careful of your settings. If you have made other scans following these and they are ok then probably your scanner is ok too.If your film was sent to a commercial house for development, I doubt the problem is in development. The only problem I have had with commercial houses, is sending the film through the wrong line which ruins the whole roll(s). Good Luck!
