flying in the snow (c)
Hello & Hi to every one.

This is my 1st post on the forum.

This was taken a few months ago on a winter workshop in wales. The great grey owl was taken down the field and then it flew straight towards us.

I was sitting in the snow hand holding the camera

1DSMK11
EF300mm F2.8
ISO 200
RAW + C1 Pro

Thanks for looking
Kevin

Welcome to the forum Kevin :wavey: :wavey:

Nice image of a truely spectacular bird - well done :toast:

Personally I'd do a bit of selective sharpening on the facial disc and perhaps a little contrast increase in the same area just to make the eye & beak area a bit 'punchier'.
I'd just have to git rid of that large black twig just right of center too, and crop wise if I could, I'd give the bird a bit more room in the frame.

But a super image and a super first post - well done

Best Regards

Andy

Welcome Kevin,
Just had a browse of your site, some great shots and I see you have some spectacular toys to play with as well - lucky fella.
I like your owl, perhaps a tad more USM.

Hi Kevin

I think I was on the same workshop in the snow. Your great grey owl flight shots are much better than I managed to achieve. I did not get any in sharp focus; how do you do it? I prefer the second image as the owl is looking straight at you. Although both images are superb.

Hi David

The focus was set to AF Servo mode and the speed of capture on the 1DSMK11 helps alot!. Also having the larger aperture on the 300mm gave me a higher shutter speed (plus of course a little luck!!)

Hi Kevin

Thanks for the information. I was using a 20D with a 70-200mm f2.8 LIS @ 200mm. Exposure was generally around 1/1000 sec. I had AF servo set and had selected the centre focusing point. I know the 1DS has better AF than the 20D, but I think I should have got at least one sharp image. Looks like my poor results are due to poor technique. Practice, practice, practice.......

Hi Kevin

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Just had a look at your website, very nice. I also noticed you work for the The Flash Centre in Birmingham. I bought my Elinchrom studio kit from you last year (via Brian).

Excellent flight shots in the snow. At first I thought you had been to Finland to do Great Grey owls, they certainly don't look like captive birds in Wales!

cheers

Welcome, Kevin. 2 nice posts - I prefer the second with better eye contact.
Best wishes

Nice pics Kevin - good to see some being posted on here too: I'm too modest to promote my workshops this way!!
