I just found a killer composition of the Silver Jack area which I had never thought about. Here is the photo from Tad Bowman's website:

Have any of you seen this area in the summer? The west facing snagletooth peaks are perfect for sunset. And the flowers and aspens make a nice foreground. The moon in the shot is an added bonus.

Are you wanting to copy or get real close to this same composition (standing in the same spot)?
It looks like the main road to the left in the composition and just north of or next to the lake. Wildflowers in the area in general are awesome. As far as this specific spot - well,it's different year to year but this looks like it might hold a pocket or 2 of paintbrush, Columbines tend toward the shade but not always. If your wanting to do the sunset on the peaks then be sure to use your GND filters or an HDR digital technique because your foreground WILL be in shadow.
BTW, thats Sheep Mountain on the left, Turret Ridge center and Dunsinane on your right. I'm sure I'll be corrected promptly if any of those are wrong!

This is that same grove of aspens right off the road that always turns such an awesome orange and red. Funny, I've never seen a summer shot of this view before. (maybe Jesse did something?) That is one awesome shot!

Chuck, you're right about Sheep Mountain, but the other features are unnamed 12,704' and the gnarly ridge that extends northward from it. Dunsinane and Precipice, etc., occupy the ridgeline just out of view of the right side of the photo, separating the Middle Fork and West Fork of the Cimarron. The ridge in the photo separates Middle Fork from East Fork.

I was actually there last fall right before Jesse got there. Here is a photo I took of it in the morning.

Of that whole area I was most impressed with those jagged peaks and the aspens in the foreground. The only problem with shooting them in the morning is that they are facing west. So you have to wait until the sun is higher to get light on them. I didn't even see it at sunset. But next time I am there I will definately check it out in the afternoon.

Chuck, thanks for the info about wildflowers in the area. I guess it is another great San Juan location for wildlfowers . Wow, so many places to visit there in the summer.

I shot this one a couple years ago in the fall. My shot was taken with the road to my right, but I believe Tad's shot it from basically the same spot, just on the other side of the road. There were quite a few photographers around when I took this, including Brent D., I believe. Haven't been there in summer, though, so I don't know about the wildflowers there.

As long as we're sharing, here's one from a few years ago taken with the half-slide on my Ebony 4x5.

Wow Todd,

I had heard fall colors weren't the greatest in that area last year compared to prior years. This photo clearly shows its great potential:biggrin:

I really like this composition which is from the west side of the road. The trees are 'extremely' vibrant in the sun light, while the background is under cloud cover. The gives the image a real 3D kind of pop to it. Very nice!

Told ja!
Good call Todd. I got my forks mixed up. Precipice wasn't showing so I should've known it wasn't Dunsinane. It's been too long!
And that is an awesome shot! But you already knew that.

Todd, your shot rocks! Yu da man!
