Jim congratulations. Does it ever get warm on Mt. Washington?

Hi Jim - pretty soon you're going to have to get an agent!

Dave,

Thanks for posting that, It's been neat to follow where that story has ended up. It's really had legs. Us humble mountain weather nerds have really had to get used to being in front of the camera this year...I'm much more comfortable on the other side of the lens...

Bill, It does get warm up there, but not yet. 3 degrees up there this morning with a windchill of -20. But a typical summer day sees temperatures in the 50s, just about perfect IMO! And the alpine flowers in early June really give us something to look forward to during the long winters...

Jim, I would absolutely love to join you up there for a little while some Winter! That sounds like so much fun for a cold and extreme weather addict like myself. How is it you make the commute in January anyhow?

Marc, We ride up in the snowcat along the auto road route in the winter. It's 8 miles to the top, and can take as much as 5 hours with low visibility and plenty of leveling. If the weather is good, we will slack pack up though. Drop off all the gear for the week on the cat early and hike up with essentials and safety gear, hiking trails are only 4ish miles each way. Non technical as well...

This is THE place to experience the weather, and can lead to spectacular shooting conditions, but you have to be willing to put in the time. I barely took out my camera in February...we were in the clouds over 70% of the time, with winds that AVERAGED almost 60mph.

If you (or anyone here) ever come back east, I'll happily show you around the high peaks...however, I will be leaving the station after four years this summer to pursue teaching hs physics in NH, and begin marketing my photography a bit more seriously. I'll be around and hiking often though!

Best time to visit, IMO, mid September to Mid October. Alpine Tundra ablaze, forests below aglow, first snow and rime on the high peaks, and stable air and undercasts = plenty of drama in the shots!

Congratulations on the feat Jim! Your office sure looks much better than mine. I should be down there (or should I say up there?) this summer ... will certainly try to make a call on you then ...

Ashutosh...looking forward to it! I'll be around :wavey:
