I recently moved to Ridgefield, Connecticut from Ohio. Fantastic area for photos in three seasons so far, I'm sure spring will be no exception.

Does anyone have any hot spots for spring wild flowers in Western Connecticut or maybe the Catskills or Palisades areas, and know when peak color is?

I've been to the Greenwich Audubon reserve and the Stamford Arboretum before, any other suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi Phil. Welcome to Connecticut. For spring flowers, I would suggest several places just off Rt. 7 in the Kent area, especially Macedonia State Park for trilliums, Bulls Bridge for wild columbine, and, of course, Kent Falls. Falls Village has a wonderful falls and ride along a river. There is a place off Rt. 61 or 63 near Morris in the Litchfield Hills where there is a huge field of daffodils which should be in bloom within a week or so, but I'll be darned if I can think of its name... possibly Spring Hill. There is the Westport Nature Center which has walks through inland marshes, etc. and is also where the Norwalk Camera Club meets. Favorite haunts... Southford Falls, Milford Audobon for shore birds. Milford is a very scenic little town with a lot of ponds and bridges, and several nice beaches to photograph birds on Long Island Sound.

As I think of more I'll email you directly. May see you around.

Pat

As I think of more, I'll let you know.

Thanks for responding, Pat. I love Kent Falls, and have explored a lot around that area and all the way North to Bash Bish falls just over the border in Massachusetts. Never been to Macedonia State Park, I appreciate the suggestion.

I loved your portfolio, your bird and macro shots are great. I recently got a 80-400 vibration reduction lens, so I'm looking forward to shooting some local birds too. I did the bald eagle cruise out of Essex a few weeks ago but we only a few and they were too far for anything decent.

Thanks again for the pointers and maybe I'll see you around! It looks like most of the other Northeast photographs in the forum are more from Vermont & New Hampshire than Connecticut, I am glad to hear there is an active local photo community here.

Philip

Hi Phil,
Welcome!
I've only been in CT for a few years but I know of a few places.
There is a great place for daffodils off Rt 8. Email me and I will send you directions.

Farther away is Hubbard Park, daffodils are great, but it's a neat place other times of the year too. Avoid April 28th & 29th as it is the Annual Daffodil Festival and you have to be bused in and ther eare lots of people. I usually go the weekend before, or sometimes a day or two before. Of course this Spring who knows when the peak will be.

Elizabeth Park is great for Spring flowers, liliac in May, ROSES in June and clematis and many other late summer flowers. World famous rose garden -- 2.5 acre garden with ~ 800 varieties of roses (15,000 plants). Spring blub garden is great, perrenial garden is great, they have a great Dahlia sale every year too. http://www.elizabethpark.org/

Traveling 2 hours will get you to Garden in the Woods -- a great place of the New England Wild Flower Society. I tend to go late May/early June but avoid the annual plant sale (June 10th this year), again you have to be bused in and there are crowds! The trillium and lady slippers are great, plus a pond and frogs and other flowers/trees at other times of the year. It can be quite buggy sometimes. Open daily from 9 am to 7 pm through June 16; daily 9 am to 5 pm from June 17 on. Garden in the Woods, 180 Hemenway Road, Framingham, MA - 508-877-7630 http://www.newfs.org/garden.htm

Nearer to you -- white flower farm, drool, drool -- great in Spring summer or Fall.

Hamden -- Sleeping Giant, Birds @ Farmington canal path, Pardee Rose Garden, Edgerton Park

Unlike the rest, I have never been to this one, but it's on the top of my list because it's spoken of highly. Eshqua Bog Natural Area, Hartland, VT.

Hopefully Spring will come soon!
